Formed in 2023, the Avani Collective is a group of multidisciplinary artists from different academic, professional, and artistic backgrounds, cultures, nationalities, ethnicities, and languages with a common interest in bringing our varied disciplines together to create site-specific and thematically challenging multi-medium works of art that are authentically us. The word "avani" meaning the Earth in Sanskrit, is our way of connecting to the lands that we are from, and with the land we are in, growing and thriving! We are a diverse and inclusive group and we don’t stick to just one way of doing things! Some of the work we do includes (but not only) multi-sensory experimental work, solo and duo traditional Indian classical dance repertoires (bharatanatyam/mohiniyattam), choreographic exploration, conducting workshops, dance and music research, artistic ideation and collaboration, and of course, meeting and discussing radical ideas!
REPERTORY
Avani Collective seeks to present the beauty that is Dance, by playing with Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam, without having to forsake the rich foundations of the forms. We seek to push boundaries, collaborate with other movement-based forms, and create visual spectacles for the audience, and for the performers themselves. If you're a movement practitioner in Ireland, and wish to join the repertory because this vibes with your values, please contact us! We're always looking for talent! We have two streams - the Indian Classical and the Experimental, and continue to explore both facets through the Collective.
DANCE SCHOOL
Our fledgling dance school, similarly envisions inculcating learners with a love for Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam, with a wholesome approach that encompasses history, philosophy, languages, allied arts, and body conditioning. We bring in guest teachers and host workshops to further this learning. The aim is to understand dance as something that is beyond human construct, and recognise its power in creating vast spaces of temporary disbelief, and genuine human connection. While we teach 'traditional' repertoire, we have separate lessons for body conditioning and experimental pedagogy.
